This Wikiproject is responsible for the creation and maintenance of lists of spaceflights, sorted by year.

This includes past years, this year, and future years. An overview of the lists is at Timeline of spaceflight.

Timeline

Duties

Members of this Wikiproject are currently responsible for:

  • Creation of lists of spaceflights, sorted by year.
  • Maintaining and adding to aforesaid lists.
  • Updating lists relating to current or future events.
  • Placing relevant links on pages about spacecraft. (eg. a link to 2005 in spaceflight on the STS-114 page.)

Guidelines

Page Naming

Page naming should follow the format Year in spaceflight, replacing year with the year that the list is documenting. (eg. 2006 in spaceflight)

Scope

All rocket launches that cross the Karman line (the official edge of space) should be listed.

Resources

http://www.shuttlepresskit.com/ Useful for Shuttle Mission details and information, officially released by the United Space Alliance Space Agencies.

http://planet4589.org/space/log/launchlog.txt

This list, by Jonathan McDowell has a complete list of all orbital spaceflights up to early 2006. We just need to format it for Wikipedia, and add sub-orbital and more up-to-date flights.

http://www.geocities.com/launchreport/slr.html

A nice site with information about current and some future launches, and launch log's for previous years.

http://www.orbireport.com/Log.html

Another list, this time including more information on sub-orbital flights, but only in 2006.

http://www.astronautix.com

A very useful resource, all spaceflights, orbital and suborbital, up to 2005.

http://www.spaceflightnow.com

Useful for orbital flights since 2004, and also upcoming flights.

http://www.nasa.gov

Useful for NASA missions, past present and future.

http://www.skyrocket.de/space/chrono.htm

Useful for all past missions.

Format

If the page relates to the current year then the {{current}} tag should be used. If it relates to a future year, then {{future}} should be used.

A set of templates have been devised for ease of creation. For details of use, click on the template names to see their own pages. All templates should be substituted, unless otherwise stated

First, insert {{TLS-H}} at the top of the page. Do not substitute it.

Now, create the main list, using these templates:

Finally, place {{TLS-F}} at the bottom of the page. There should be no linebreaks or blank lines.

Now, create the talk page:

Place {{TLS-N}} at the top.

To add a link to a list of spaceflights from a spacecraft's page, use {{TLS-A}}.

Articles should use the D MMMM date format, for example 28 October. British English should be used, with the exceptions of place names and organisations within the United States, or another English-speaking country, where the name differs, for example, the United States Department of Defense, or the Kennedy Space Center.* Times should all be in GMT.

* - Other exemptions are under discussion - see the project talk page.

Content:

The sections that should be included are:

Introduction
This gives a brief description of major events in the year
Launches
A tabular listing of all orbital and suborbital launches over 100km in the year
Deep-space rendezvous
A list of all encounters between spacecraft and astronomical objects (eg. planets) in the year
Note that the spelling "rendezvous" should be used, not "rendez-vous"
EVAs
A tabular listing of all spacewalks in the year
References (including footer)
Substitute {{TLS-F}}

Mission outcomes

Successful is used when
The mission is complete, and
All objectives have been accomplished
Failure is used when
No primary objectives are met, or
There is an LOC or LOCV scenario on a manned flight, or
The rocket fails to orbit (does not apply to sub-orbital launches), or
The spacecraft is placed inexorably in a useless orbit, or
The spacecraft fails to contact the ground after separation, or
The spacecraft malfunctions within three months of reaching the correct orbit*
Partial failure is used when:
Some primary mission objectives are met, but some are not, or
The carrier rocket places the payload into an incorrect orbit, but
The spacecraft can still operate in the incorrect orbit, or
The spacecraft can correct its own orbit

* - negotiable depending on intended mission duration
