Welcome to WikiProject Anime and manga, a WikiProject that aims to improve anime and manga related articles by normalizing the standards for, and expanding Wikipedia's coverage of, such articles.

Scope

WikiProject Anime and manga's scope includes all media, persons, organizations and fandom substantially related to such franchises. This includes international subjects necessary for comprehensive coverage of the core topics.

Although its scope is broad, this project maintains an essential focus on media meant primarily for consumption in Japan. Animated or printed works produced for consumption outside of Japan that nevertheless draw on or are similar to Japanese media in terms of content or form (such as Chinese animation, Korean animation, manhwa, manhua, Megatokyo, and Peach Fuzz) regrettably do not fall under our scope. Nor do media, particularly video games, in which anime or manga characters make incidental or out-of-context appearances.

Participants

User WP Anime
This user is a participant of WikiProject Anime and Manga.

A list of participants can be found at Category:WikiProject Anime and manga participants.

Technically speaking, anyone who edits / contributes to anime and manga related articles is a participant, and there are no requirements other than that. If one wishes they can further identify themselves with the project by listing their name as a participant. This helps spread the word about the project and can help other editors see what types of articles that user is interested in editing.

To add yourself to the project listing add the following to your user page:

[[Category:WikiProject Anime and manga participants|{{subst:PAGENAME}}]]

Or, if you wish to use the userbox, add {{User WP Anime}} to your user page instead as it includes the above wikicode.

Awards

The Anime and manga BarnSakura is awarded to users who have made particularly fine contributions to anime- and manga-related articles, and/or to WikiProject Anime and manga.

To award the BarnSakura, use the following code:

Reference links

  • Anime News Network - Anime news site with an extensive anime encyclopedia.
  • ANN Reviews - Nearly 1,000 anime and manga reviews from Anime News Network.
  • AnimeOnDVD.com - Anime news site with thousands of anime and manga reviews - due to recent merger with Mania.com, editors must be particularly careful the reviews are from AnimeOnDVD and NOT from the "Maniacs" section which are user-submitted
  • AnimeResearch.com - Includes academic articles on anime and its culture.
  • ICv2 - Current and archived industry news, including sales rankings for manga/graphic novels.
  • Intersections - Free, online academic journal focusing on East Asian media.
  • Kanji Converter - Converts kanji to kana and Roman characters.
  • Voice Artist DataBase - Japanese voice actor database. (Japanese)

A note about using Anime News Network as a reference: ANN is divided into sections of varying quality. For news, reviews, and release information, ANN is reliable source and close to being a newspaper of record for anime and manga. However, because the encyclopedia portion is user-edited, that information is not reliable by Wikipedia standards. That said, it is the experience of this WikiProject that the ANN's encyclopedia can be used with care for certain kinds of information:

  • Generally reliable but try to confirm these with a second source: production staff, producers/publishers, air/publication dates
  • Not very reliable and so use only with confirmation from other sources: biographical data, episode title translations
  • Do not use: genres (except as given by a reviewer)

Note also that credit lists, especially for mangaka, are rarely complete.
