Vidyasagar University (Bengali: বিদ্যাসাগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়)is a state-government administered, affiliating and research university located in Midnapore district of southern West Bengal, in India.
HistoryThe university was established on 29 September 1981 by the Vidyasagar University Act 1981 (West Bengal Act XVIII of 1981) of the state of West Bengal to commemorate Pandit Iswar Chandra Bandyopadhyay , also known as Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, the great educationist and social worker of 19th century Bengal. The University Grants Commission accorded recognition to the university under Section 12 B on March 1, 1990. Mission statementThe university was established with a mission to provide an answer to the educational needs of the region. It provides ethnic, socio – cultural, geographical along with mainstream education. The university logo with the motto Education, Knowledge, Progress embodies the mission stated above. Nature of institutionThe university is an affiliating institution and has its jurisdiction over Midnapore District or any district which may be created in future out of any part thereof. Thirty colleges of the University of Calcutta situated within the District of Midnapore were initially deemed to have been affiliated to Vidyasagar University. Now the total number has been raised to 39 including three engineering colleges viz.,
The Master of Social Work course of Vidyasagar School of Social Work (located at the Kolkata based Jayaprakash Institute of Social Change) was given affiliation by the university. Recently, a number of management institutes applied to the university seeking affiliation of their various management curricula .The university has in principle, also agreed to affiliate a medical college which is going to be started soon at Midnapore town. The University Authority is also considering the proposal for introducing postgraduate courses at undergraduate colleges affiliated to the university. Postgraduate departments also offer courses in unconventional areas, and innovative research is being carried out in fields largely unexplored, and extension and field action are being geared to the fulfillment of the above mission. The university has been conducting postgraduate courses as well as one year bridge courses in distance education mode in Fine Arts, Commerce and Science subjects, like Botany, Forestry, Physics, Aquaculture Management and Technology and Techno-Physics. These courses are fully regulated by the norms of the Distance Education Council. In fact, the Council has offered financial support for infrastructural development. Academic standardsA good number of postgraduate students of this university were qualified for NET, GATE and SLET examinations for university lecturership positions. As many as 49 candidates were admitted to the Ph.D programs of the university . Other scholars have submitted their theses for adjudication.
