It lies on the banks of the Seine River, about midway between the cities of Paris and Rouen. The city is well-known for its production of aircraft and rocket engines by the SNECMA group. In the 1999 census, Vernon had a population of 24,056. The commune has a land area of 34.92 km² (13.483 sq mi).
Vernon was apparently so important to the King of France, Philippe Auguste that he attached it to the kingdom of France even before he did the rest of Normandy (1196 for Vernon, and 1204 for the rest of Normandy).[1] Among those who conferred their ancestral rights to fishing and hunting rights in the forest of Vernon to the King was Norman nobleman Laurent de Livet, who transferred his rights to King Philippe Auguste in .[2][3]
The village gave its name to an early English family who were part of the Norman Conquest.
