Vaala is a municipality in Finland. It is located in the province of Oulu, Kainuu region. Established in 1954 (predecessor municipality Säräisniemi, established in 1867), the municipality has a population of 3,472 (30 November 2008) and the municipality covers an area of 1,763.92 square kilometres (681.05 sq mi) (excluding sea areas) of which 461.42 square kilometres (178.16 sq mi) is inland water (2008-01-01). The population density is 2.7 inhabitants per square kilometre (7.0 /sq mi) (30 November 2008). Oulujärvi, the fourth largest lake of Finland is located partly in Vaala. The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Vaala is also an old finnish word, which means the phase in a river just before rapids. Reference
