The University of Moncton (Fr: Université de Moncton) is a French language university in Moncton, New Brunswick serving the Acadian community of Atlantic Canada. It is the only francophone university in New Brunswick and is one of only two such universities in the Maritime Provinces, the other being the Université Sainte-Anne in neighbouring Nova Scotia.
HistoryFounded in 1963, the modern University of Moncton is an amalgamation of six colleges, including the Collège Saint-Joseph (founded at Memramcook in 1864), the Collège du Sacré-Coeur de Bathurst, and the Collège Saint-Louis d'Edmundston. [1] In 1989, University of Moncton founded undergraduate degrees in adult education. CampusesIt has campuses in Edmundston and Shippagan in addition to the primary campus in Moncton. PartnershipsThe university is a member of L'Association des universités de la francophonie canadienne, a network of academic institutions of the Canadian Francophonie. [2] FacultiesThe main campus at Moncton has eight faculties:
Faculty of LawThe University of Moncton's Faculty of Law is one of only three French-language common law schools in Canada. (The University of Ottawa and McGill also offer common law degrees in French.) The school was founded in 1978 in order to respond to the needs of francophone communities outside of Quebec. As Quebec practices civil law, there was a need to instruct francophone lawyers in common law to practice in other parts of Canada. The University of Ottawa law school teaches both common and civil law, as does McGill; thus the University of Moncton's Faculty of Law is the only exclusively French, exclusively common law school in Canada.[4]
AthleticsThe university is represented in Canadian Interuniversity Sport by the Moncton Aigles Bleus. The Aigles Bleus have a male and female hockey team, a male and female soccer team, a male and female Athletics (track and field),a male and female Cross country running team and a female volleyball team.
