12 Miles Containment?

The oak disease is noted to be contained in a 12 mile area. Is this square miles?

As of June 2008, the area quarantined in Curry Co. is 162 square miles. However the area with diseased plants, mostly tanoak, is much smaller. 720^[1] acres were identified for treatment in 2007, but that includes infected trees and adjacent buffer area.
