Swinburne, Smith and Company was a railroadlocomotive manufacturing company of the mid-19th century. The company was founded in 1845, in Paterson, New Jersey, by a partnership between William Swinburne and Samuel Smith. William Swinburne had been a pattern maker for Rogers, Ketchum and Grosvenor who worked his way up to become shop foreman.
Swinburne remained in business for only a decade, failing with the Panic of 1857. After a reorganization to become New Jersey Locomotive and Machine Company, the company was purchased in 1858 by the New York and Erie Railway and became that railroad's maintenance shops facilities in Paterson.
