Coordinates: 31°32′N 76°53′E / 31.53, 76.88 Sunder Nagar (Devanagari: सुंदर नगर) is a city and a municipal council in Mandi district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Formerly it was a princely state, known as Suket.^{citation needed}

Geography

Sunder Nagar is located at 31.53° N 76.88° E^[1]. It has an average elevation of 861 metres (2824 feet).

Accessibility

Reaching Sunder Nagar is not easy by Rail as the neareast Broad Gauge Railway Station is Kiratpur Sahib(Punjab) which is about 100 km. The nearest narrow gauge Railway Station is JoginderNagar (80 km).

Sundar Nagar is situated on National Highway 21, almost 5.5 h from Chandigarh. The nearest airport is Bhuntar, near Kullu.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census^[2], Sunder Nagar had a population of 23,979. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Sunder Nagar has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 78%. In Sunder Nagar, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

There is a mixture of Himachali's, Punjabi's, Haryanvi's and Rajasthani's in this town. This is due to the presence of the Bhakra Beas Management Board.(B.B.M.B), which is a Govt. of India project having Punjab, Haryana, Rajsthan and Himachal Pradesh as partners and hence the employees are mostly from Punjab, Haryana and Rajsthan.

Education

There is a Govt. Polytechnic, an Engineering College, a dental college and hospital [Himchal Dental College], a degree college [M.L.S.M.], Sanskrit College besides many schools in Sundar Nagar. There are two schools of B.B.M.B. Project Senior Secondary Model School and Senior Secondary School. And then there is St.Mary's High Secondary School. The notable institutions are:
