Sugar Island is located in the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River in Ontario. It is approx 43 acres of undeveloped island wilderness. In the 1950s this local nautical charts change the name from St. Lawrence Island to the name the island is now known as, Sugar Island. In the late 1800s the island was inhabited year round by a farming family, and the maple trees were tapped for syrup, which gave Sugar Island its current name. The American Canoe Association holds its annual meet here every summer and has for over 75 years. Canoeists, kayakers and sailors come to visit from around the world and participate in long standing competitions. http://sugar.islandertalk.com
