"Spinning Around" British and Australia is a dance–pop song produced by Mike Spencer and written by Ira Shickman, Osborne Bingham, Kara DioGuardi and Paula Abdul. It was originally intended for Paula Abdul's "comeback" album (as she wrote the lyrics as well as some of the music). However, as the album never came into fruition, it was given to Australian singer Kylie Minogue for her seventh studio album Light Years in 2000. For Minogue, the song was a worldwide success, charting high in many countries, and, marking her return to the forefront of pop music, as it was originally intended to do for Abdul. Possibly the most eagerly awaited release of her career, "Spinning Around" achieved gold status in Australia prior to the album being released.[1] The first single from her Light Years album, caused a sensation by propelling Kylie back to the top of the charts, debuting at No. 1 in both the UK and Australia.[2] In the United Kingdom, "Spinning Around" has sold 245,000 copies, being certified Silver. The song became Kylie's first number one single in Australia since "Confide In Me" (1994) and her first in the UK since "Tears on My Pillow" ten years earlier. "Spinning Around" also gave Kylie the honor of being one of three artists (the others being Madonna and U2) to have a number one in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. "Spinning Around" won Kylie Best Pop Release at the prestigious ARIA Awards in Australia[3] and featured two previously unreleased tracks — "Paper Dolls" and "Cover Me with Kisses".[4] Due to the title of the song it has been used regularly in reference to politics, for example BBC Radio Five Live's coverage of the 2000 US presidential election and Andrew Marr's news report on Tony Blair's resignation speech.
