Skate punk is a subgenre of punk rock, originally a derivative of hardcore punk, that has been popular among skateboarders.1 Many members of skate punk bands have been skateboarders. Their lyrics occasionally focus on, or at least reference, skateboarding. Skate bands formed a large part of the greater 1980s hardcore movement, especially in Southern California, with bands such as Agent Orange, Suicidal Tendencies (vocalist Mike Muir is the younger brother of Z-Boys legend Jim Muir), The Faction (featuring professional skateboarder Steve Caballero), and JFA. The Texas hardcore scene also had many skate bands, such as Big Boys, The Dicks, and DRI. In the 1990s, more melodic skate punk bands such as The Offspring, Pennywise, No Use For A Name, NOFX, Millencolin, Lagwagon, Strung Out, MxPx, and Face to Face had large audiences.
Musically, Skate punk was very diverse, with bands such as Agent Orange having a profound surf music influence, Suicidal Tendencies and DRI being important Crossover Thrash bands, and many of the 1990s bands being simultaneously considered pop punk bands.
