Geography

Sholavandan is located at 10°01′00″N 77°58′00″E / 10.0167, 77.9667.5 It has an average elevation of 127 metres (419 feet).

Civic administration

The Chairman of the Town is V. Ayyappan who won as an independent in the local body elections conducted in 2001.1 There are 18 wards as part of this Town Panchayat each represented by an elected member.6 Sholavandan comes under the vadipatti, a taluk in the madurai district. Sholavandan is a Revenue village under this taluk along with 77 villages.

Politics

Elected in the Tamil Nadu state assembly election, 2006, P. Moorthy of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam represents Sholavandan in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.78 Sholavandan assembly constituency is part of Dindigul (Lok Sabha constituency),9 which is represented by N.S.V. Chitthan of the Indian National Congress.10.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census11, Sholavandan had a population of 21,661. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Sholavandan has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 65%. In Sholavandan, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

The prime occupation of the people is Agriculture.Sholavandan is very famous for the "betel-leaves" grown there, and other major plantations are coconut, rice and banana.Thenkarai village is called small "Coconut island" near by town.

Thenkarai Sivan Kovil(Agakilandaeswarikovil) near by the town & Vaigai River.Other notable temples include Chithra Vallava perumal temple situated on the village kurivithurai 8km near by the town and Edaga Naadha Swamy Kovil in Thiruvedagam village.
