Sergeant(Kersantti in Finnish) is a Swedish and Finnish military rank above Furir in Sweden and Alikersantti in Finland; and below Fänrik in Sweden and Ylikersantti in Finland. Sweden: Sergeants have been seen to fill up positions as non-combat team-leaders (4-8men) and combat positions as team-leaders and deputy team-leaders (6-8 men) during international operations including the Nordic Battle Group. It can also be temporarily assigned rank for former conscripts whom get hired as an instructor but had a lower or no rank at all. Team-leaders and deputy platoon-leaders of the Home Guard typically have this rank.

The rank will change name to Förste Sergeant in Jaunary, 2009.

In Sweden, the rank corresponds to Corporal in the USMC and the British Army (ref).


Obtaining the rank in Sweden

It is awarded after completing 11 months of level 7 conscript training or after compleating a minimum of 6 months of basic military training followed by one year training at the Specialist Officers School. Level 7 corresponds to team leader level.

Obtaining the rank in Finland

Two months of basic military training and selected for underofficer training, followed by 10 month of reseerve underofficers training. Top graduates are promoted to Kersantti depending on availiable positions in the war organization, the rest to alikersantti.

Sweden: New two-career-path system

After the implementation of the two-career-paths systems for officers 2008, this rank will become a professional rank within the newly created “specialist officer” category. Typically specialists, team-leaders (5-8 soldiers) and/or tank commanders will hold this rank. The intention of the new system is to better align Swedish military forces with that of Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Britton as well as increasing the skills of leaders of team, squad, platoon level units. It is a partly rollback to the system that existed prior the implementation of the one career path system 1983.

The introduction of the rank

Sweden: Reform 1972

Holders of the rank Överfurir were elevated to Sergeants. Holders of the rank Sergeant were elevated to

  • Kapten with more than 7 years of service
  • Löjtnant with 3-7 years of service
  • Fänrik with less than 3 years of service

Reform 1972 - Rank inflation phase I

Prior 1972, military personnel were divided into three categories Underbefäl, Underofficerare and Officerare. The reform established a four-career-path system with four categories as described below and carried out major promotions of most personnel below the rank Överstelöjtnant.

The underbefäl category was split into two categories

  • Gruppbefäl to include
Korpral - former Vicekorpral
Furir - former Korpral
Överfurir - former Furir
  • Plutonsofficerare to include
Sergeant - former Överfurir
Fanjunkare - former elderly Överfurir and Rustmästare

The "Underofficer"s category was renamed Kompaniofficerare to include

Fänrik - former Sergeant and Fanjunkare with less than 3 years of service
Löjtnant - former Sergeant and Fanjunkare with 3-7 years of service
Kapten - former Sergeant, Fanjunkare with a minimum of 7 years of serviceand and Förvaltare

The Officers category was renamed Regementsofficerare to include

Löjtnant - Löjtnant with less than 3 years of service and former Fänrik
Kapten - Kapten with less than 11 years of service and former Löjtnant with 3-11 years of service
Major - former Kapten and Löjtnant with a minimum of 11 years of service
Överstelöjtnant - Överstelöjtnant and former Major
higher ranks

Reform 1983 - Rank inflation phase II

All categories were merged into one professional officer category with the lowest rank set to Fänrik. Furir, Överfurir, Sergeant and Fanjunkare were removed as a professional ranks. Holders of the rank Fanjunkare were promoted to Löjtnant and the rest to Fänrik.

Sweden: 2008

The rank was reintroduced as a professional rank in the newly formed Specialist officers corps.

Sweden: June 6, 2008

Firs cadre of 92 Army Specialist Officers graduated as Sergeants from the ground battle school at Kvarn. Those have received training to become squadleaders and will serve as instructors at traing centers around Sweden.
