Serco-NedRailways is a trading name for the organization that controls Merseyrail and Northern Rail, two of Great Britain's franchised passenger train operating companies.3 The business is a 50:50 consortium owned by NedRailways, the UK subsidiary of Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) and Serco Group. NS, or Dutch Railways, is the state railway company of the Netherlands. Serco, a UK-based public company, is an international provider of outsourced public sector services, and an operator of public transport systems such as London's Docklands Light Railway. The objective of the joint venture is to operate passenger rail services in Great Britain.4 The joint venture also submitted an unsuccessful bid for the West Midlands passenger rail franchise period that began in 2007 (awarded to London Midland.)5 References
