Seodaemun-gu is a gu located in northwestern Seoul, South Korea. Seodaemun-gu incorporates residential and historical areas. It is home to several prominent universities, including Yonsei and Ewha, Bongwon Temple and the notorious Seodaemun Prison.2 The district covers 17.6 square kilometers, approximately 2.9% of the total area of Seoul. Seodaemun literally means "Great West Gate" which was one of the four great gates in the wall surrounding the Joseon capital city of Hanyang; only Dongdaemun and Bukdaemun survive intact. Seodaemun-gu is populated by middle and upper-income families.
