Semhar is the name of a former Province of Eritrea, which has now become almost entirely incorporated into the Northern Red Sea Region of Eritrea. It may be oftenly used as a name for Eritrean females.
The word "Semhar" refers to a certain plant with a mint-like smell in Tigrigna (a language spoken in Eritrea as well as some parts of Ethiopia). It is also an old name given to lands that are found near the Red Sea (see Massawa). These lands were given this name due to their abundance of the Semhar flower.
