Seligenstadt is a town in the district of Offenbach, in Hesse, Germany. It is situated on the left bank of the Main, 15 km northwest of Aschaffenburg, and 22 km southeast of Frankfurt.

Seligenstadt has three districts: Seligenstadt, Klein-Welzheim and Froschhausen.

Geography

Nearby cities include Hainburg to the north, Karlstein to the east in Bavaria, Mainhausen to the southeast, Babenhausen to the south, and Rodgau to the west. Seligenstadt is one of thirteen cities in the district of Offenbach.

History

The city is one of the oldest in Germany. It was first recorded in the year 815 as Obermühlheim under the patronage of Einhard. The name "Seligenstadt" (City of the Blessed) derives from the Saints Peter and Marcellinus, whose relics Einhard had transfered to his basilica.

However, local lore ascribes the name to Charlemagne, whose daughter Emma eloped with her lover Einhard. Charlemagne found them at Obermühlheim and forgave them, saying "Blessed be the name of the city where I found my daughter!", explaining the name by a folk etymology. The story has been popularised by poet Wilhelm Busch.¹

Main sights

Seligenstadt's inner city has many old houses, but its main feature is the Basilica. The Einhardhaus (named after Einhard) at the marketplace, the old city wall, the monastery next to the Basilica, and the Palatium built by Frederich II are other interesting attractions. The Klein Welzheim district has a large moated castle (Wasserburg). Seligenstadt is also home to Glaabsbräu, one of the most popular private breweries in Germany.
