The seedeaters and their relatives are a group of passerine birds formerly placed in the bunting family Emberizidae. They are now known to be tanagers closely related to Darwins finches.citation needed Indeed, some seedeaters are closer to these, while the more "true" seedeaters form a clade with certain tanagers. A few "atypical" seedeaters are closely related to a number of tanagers, many of which (such as the flowerpiercers) have peculiarly adapted bills.

They are seed-eating Central and South American birds with a distinctively conical bill.
