It covers an area of 18.04 km² and has a population of 6 758 (July 2004). It is the second largest wine growing village in Rheinhessen with 6.8 km² of vineyards. 24 km² are given over to other agriculture, mainly grain, sugar beet and asparagus. The largest company in Saulheim is one of Germany's 32 post office freight centers.
Saulheim was first mentioned in written records in 763 and as such counts as one of the oldest places in Rheinhessen. It was the birthplace of German-American lumber magnate Friedrich Weyerhäuser (1834-1914), who in 1904 founded and funded Saulheim's music hall.
