A satchel is a bag used by many people to carry books, and other objects in. It has one, sometimes two, large straps that goes over one shoulder and across the body. Many students use them at universities and colleges. Like all bags, satchels are easily customised with patches and various other creative textiles.
History
The satchel became a fashion accessory and was popular all throughout the 17th century. The satchel predates the now common backpack.
Satchels are commonly referred to as messenger bags in modern parlance.
