Sassuolo is an industrial town south of Modena and north west of Bologna in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. The town's wealth derives from being the centre of the Italian (and thus global) tile industry for many decades. Cheaper tiles first from Spain and then from China have economically damaged the town, leaving an unclear role for it in the future.

Among the main sights in the town is the summer Ducal palace of Sassuolo completed and decorated mainly in the 17th century for the Dukes of Este. the architect was Bartolomeo Avanzini in 1634. The interior was frescoed by the French baroque painter Jean Boulanger, as well as by Angelo M. Colonna and Agostino Mitelli. In the ground is a large pool surrounded by ruins called Il fontanazzo.
