1 Originally founded by an outstanding leader, often known as a Rebbe / Tzadik / Admor / Ruv / Grand Rabbi.
2 Continues beyond initial leader's lifetime by succession of selected member or descendant.
3 Often named after a town where the founder may have been born or lived, or where the group began.

The Sassov (also Sassow) Hasidic dynasty began with Rabbi Moshe Leib Erblich of Sassov (1745-1807), a disciple of Rabbi Dovber of Mezeritch, the disciple of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism.

Sassov was located in Eastern Galicia, now in present day Ukraine. 1

Other Sasover Rebbes

Grand Rabbi Yoseph David Teitelbaum of Sassov from Israel

Today there are several Sassover Rebbes, who are not descendants of Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sassov, but are actually part of the Alesk dynasty.

There is a Sassov community based in Golders Green, in North West London, having moved from the East End of London in 1942. The previous Rebbe, Grand Rabbi Simcha Rubin, died June 10, 2003 at the age of 93. He had served as leader of his community since 1929, on the passing his father Grand Rabbi Henoch Dov Rubin.

He was succeeded as rabbi of the synagogue by Rabbi Shlomo Yisrael Freshwater, who did not take on the title of "Sassover Rebbe".

This title was later assumed by Rabbi Rubin's grandson, Rabbi Mordechai Yehuda Rubin, who lives in Bnei Berak, Israel.

Rabbi Lipa Meir Teitelbaum, was the Sassov-Keretzky Rebbe. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum of Satmar. He was succeeded by his two sons: Grand Rabbi Yoseph Dovid Teitelbaum who is the Sassover Rebbe in Kiryat Yismach Moshe in Ganei Tikva, in Israel, and a son-in-law of Grand Rabbi David Moshe of Kretchnif. He was a disciple of the previous Klausenberger Rebbe. His brother, Rabbi Chanoch Heynach Teitelbaum is the Sassover Rebbe in Monsey, NY.
