The Saskatchewan Order of Merit is an award given in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. When a Lieutenant-Governor is sworn in, he/she will automatically receive and become a member of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit and represent as the Chancellor of the Order during the terms of office.
PurposeCreated in 1985, the award is the most prestigious official honour in the province. The Order recognizes the highest level of individual excellence and achievement in any field. It takes precedence over all other provincial honours and awards. EligibilityAny Canadian citizen who is a current or former resident of Saskatchewan is eligible for nomination. Posthumous nominations are accepted within one year of the date of death. Only ten people can receive the award annually. The Provincial Emblems and Honours Act was altered in 2001 to allow for honorary membership in the Order to people who are not current or former residents of Saskatchewan. [1] In 2001 The Prince of Wales was invested while on a visit to Saskatchewan and in 2006 The Earl of Wessex was invested while on a visit to western Canada.
