Nakijin gusuku (今帰仁城?) built during the Sanzan Period

The Sanzan Period (三山時代 Sanzan-jidai?) is a period of history of the Ryūkyū Kingdom that lasted from 1322 until 1429.

The early 13th century saw a growth in the construction of Gusuku by a number of powerful kings leading to the emergence of three kingdoms in the 14th century: Nanzan (南山? lit: Southern Mountain), Chūzan (中山? lit: Central Mountain) and Hokuzan (北山? lit: Northern Mountain) (hence the name of the period that translates to three mountains). These three kingdoms existed for approximately 100 years until the ruler of Chūzan, Shō Hashi annexed the Kingdom of Hokuzan in 1416 and Nanzan in 1429, thereby unifying the Ryūkyū Kingdom.
