In January 1998, a tourbus of college students and faculty from the U.S. state of Maryland was traveling near Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa. The bus was hijacked by a band of armed assailants who then proceeded to rape five of the female students. The event attracted international attention and raised scrutiny about the safety of students enrolled in study abroad programs.
