The Diocese of Essen is a diocese of the Catholic church in Germany. It has about one million Catholics.
Based in the Ruhr, it consists of a heavily urbanized area. The diocese was founded on 1 January, 1958 to bring the Catholic Church hierarchy closer to the working poor of this industrial region.[1]
Though the Diocese is not yet 50 years old, the Cathedral is over a thousand years old, having been a parishchurch before it was raised to being the seat of a Bishop.
