Renu Khator (born 19 June 1955 in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, India) is the chancellor of the University of Houston System and president of the University of Houston. Before assuming the position in January of 2008, Khator served as provost and senior vice-president at the University of South Florida. She is the first foreign-born president of the university, and the second woman to hold the position.[2]

Career
Prior to moving to the United States, Khator earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Kanpur in 1973.[3] Moving soon thereafter, Khator attended Purdue University, and received an M.A. in Political science and a Ph.D. in Political science and Public administration in 1975 and 1985 respectively.
Beginning in 1985, Renu Khator began a twenty-two year career affiliation with the University of South Florida (USF). Khator served in various positions at USF, culminating in her position as provost and senior vice-president of the university.
On 15 October 2007, the University of Houston announced Khator as the sole-finalist for the vacant position of president at the university and chancellor of the affiliated system. On 5 November 2007, she was confirmed by the board of regents for the dual-position.[4] Khator officially took her position in January of 2008.
Personal life
Through a traditional arranged marriage, Renu Khator married her husband Suresh Khator in 1974.[5] Suresh Khator, another Purdue graduate, holds a doctorate in engineering, and is a professor at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering. The Khators have two daughters who are both ophthalmologists.
