However, many raw vegans claim their personal experiences with the diet, and simple logic (usually citing that humans are the only animal to eat cooked food and have by far the longest list of degenerative diseases of any animal), secure their faith in the diet. Also, many medical authorities stress the possible lack of vitamin B12 in the diet, which is naturally present in large quantities in animal foods and is essential for many bodily functions.
