French monarchy, 843– 1870
Marie-Thérèse de France was the fourth child and third daughter of Louis XIV and his Queen Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche . As a daughter of the king, she was a Fille de France . At court, as the eldest surviving daughter of the king, she was known by the traditional honorific of Madame Royale .
Life
She was also known as La Petite Madame in order to distinguish her from her aunts, the wives of her uncle Monsieur , who were known as the first Madame (died 1670) and the second Madame (died 1722).
Marie-Therèse was born January 2 , 1667 at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye and died March 1 , 1672 also at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye . Her parents had her baptised in the Palais du Louvre in 1668. She was said to have been adored by her parents and her mother had wanted her to become the queen of her native Spain . Both of her parents were badly affected by her death and Louis XIV made the court go into strict mourning.
