The President of Cyprus is the head of state and the head of government of the Republic of Cyprus . The office was created in 1960, after Cyprus gained its independence from the United Kingdom . Currently, the President of Cyprus is Dimitris Christofias .
After the 1974 coup d'état which installed Nikos Sampson , Turkey invaded Northern Cyprus on 20 July 1974 , and in 1983 created the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus , which is recognized only by Turkey itself. Consequently, the jurisdiction of the Republic of Cyprus does de facto not extent to the northern third of the island.
