Porto Novo (Portuguese for “new port”) is the westernmost municipality in Cape Verde and all of Africa but not the mainland. It is a town and a municipality in the island of Santo Antão of Barlavento. It covers two-thirds of the island and home to one-third of the population. Geographical features include Topo de Coroa, the tallest mountain of the island, elevating around 1,979 m. The plain area which are consists of farmlands cover the area round Porto Novo, the mountains cover the northern, western and the central parts and some are in valley areas. Much of the municipality is grassy or bushy, a few forests cover the mountain area while farmlands are in the plain around Porto Novo and in valley areas. Its main economy are businesses in Porto Novo and tourism, it is followed by agriculture which is one of the main industry.
