The plain is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Mount Carmel to the north, the hills of Samaria to the east, and the modern day Tel Aviv metropolitan area to the south with the Yarkon River the southern geographical border. As such, the plain stretches 89km. Mentioned in the Bible, the plain was historically famous for being fertile, although it later became marshland, being reclaimed only in the early twentieth century by Zionist pioneers who populated the region with many settlements.[1] The region has grown to become Israel's most densely populated.[2]
