Philip was supposed to inherit the Duchy of Burgundy, County of Artois and Palatine County of Burgundy, but he died prematurely by a kick of a farmer's horse, that caught him in the head. His widow Joanna remarried king John II of France in 1349. Since Philip had no other children from his marriage to Joanna, the future of the House of Burgundy was then placed in the hands of his young son Philip de Rouvres (1346-61), who afterwards died childless.
