The Pacific Coast Theater of the American Civil War was the military operations in the United States bordering or close to the Pacific Ocean, including the states of California, Oregon, and Nevada and the territories of Washington, Utah, and Idaho.[1] The heaviest fighting was usually between Union troop detachments from California and Confederate sympathizing Indians though, Union and Confederate forces did meet in the theater. Neither side had huge armies in the area, most of it was between small army departments.

The campaign classification established by the United States National Park Service[2] contains only one campaign and one battle in this theater. Other operations west of the Mississippi River are included in the Trans-Mississippi Theater.
