The setting is a fictionalCentral European country, at different periods in time ranging from the Middle Ages to the 1960s.
The cycle was extended by the Borges-like story "Two Delays on the Northern Line" (1979), anthologised in The Compass Rose (1982); and "Unlocking the Air" (1990), anthologised in Unlocking the Air and Other Stories (1996), which is set at the time of the downfall of Communism in Orsinia – and the rest of Eastern Europe – in the winter of 1989. In addition, Le Guin's novel Malafrena is set in the Orsinia of the 1820s.
