"Ode to the Motherland" (traditional Chinese: ; simplified Chinese: ; pinyin: Gēchàng Zǔguǒ) is a famous patriotic song of the People's Republic of China, written and music composed by Wang Xin (Chinese: ; pinyin: Wáng Xīn) (October 1918–October 15, 2007) during the period immediately after the founding of the People's Republic of China (1949-1951).

Origin

When Mao Zedong declared the founding of the People's Republic of China under a sea of fluttering Five-Starred Red Flags on 1 October 1949, he said, "The Chinese people has stood up today!". This was an inspiring moment for the millions of patriotic Chinese, and remains so to this day. Wang Xin wrote this song shortly after seeing the the sea of fluttering Five-Starred Red Flags again during the preparation for the first anniversary of the PRC in October 1950. The song's lyrics and its music composition were officially published on 15 September 1951 on the People's Daily.
