The Nunavut capital plebiscite was held in the area of the Northwest Territories, Canada, that was to be split off into the new territory of Nunavut to select a capital city for the new territory.
It was held on on December 11, 1995, and was the third plebiscite in the history of the Northwest Territories. It was run under the Northwest Territories Plebiscite Act and overseen by Elections Northwest Territories. The plebiscite was non-binding, and the results were to be taken by Government of Canada's Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Ron Irwin, to the federal Cabinet.
A breakdown of community results will never be released: all the ballots were sealed and taken to a neutral site for counting in order to prevent animosity between communities.
