Nukulaelae is one of the six atolls of Tuvalu, and has a population (2002 census) of 393. It has the form of an oval and consists of at least 15 islets. The atoll was claimed by the United States from sometime in the 1800s until 1983, when claims to the atoll were ceded to Tuvalu.

Notable local person

Bikenibeu Paeniu, (1956-), who served two terms as Prime Minister of Tuvalu, represents Nukulaelae in the Parliament of Tuvalu.
