Novellara is a town in the province of Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. It's 19 km north from Reggio Emilia and has a railway station for the local train going from Reggio to Guastalla. The city has 12.793 inhabitants. Today we can still see the most ancient buildings made on ground reliefs. Among the most important City monuments we have the Chiesa collegiata di Santo Stefano, the Jesuite Convent, now under restoration, the Rocca ("Gonzaga Castle"), the Casino di Sotto and Casino di Sopra; the last two were summer residences of the Gonzaga family. At the Gonzaga Museum there is a rare and precious XVI century vase collection, coming from the Gesuiti's old Pharmacy. Novellara is also remembered because Augusto Daolio, the singer and founder of the Nomadi band, was born here in February 18, 1947.
In addition to this Novellara is also home to the second largest Gurdwara in Europe. This comes from the presence of a very large community of Sikh people, living in Novellara and nearby places, where they work mainly in cattle farms and dairies.
The current name comes from the medieval Nubilaria, when the surrounding terrain was mostly covered by marshes, which favoured the formation of recurring fogs.
The Casino di Sotto and Casino di Sopra, summer residences of the Gonzagas.
The main square (Piazza Unità d'Italia) with the Church of St. Stephen, important work by Lelio Orsi.
As in other towns of the region, (e.g. Bologna), streets are flanked by characteristic arcades, intended to offer shade in summer and shelter from rain or snow.
