Originally Nova Scotia's post-secondary specialized training and vocational institutes operated independently, however in 1988 the Nova Scotia Community College was created by an act of the provincial legislature as a means to centralize administration, coordinate funding and remove program duplication. Since then, the NSCC network of campuses has evolved into a province-wide, community-based, polytechnical institute.
NSCC provides the majority of technical and apprenticeship training in the province of Nova Scotia. Within the NSCC organization are the nationally-recognized Nova Scotia Nautical Institute[1] and the Centre of Geographical Sciences[2] which is also internationally-recognized as a leader in Geomatics training. There are 13 campuses and six community learning centres throughout the province.
