Nottingham East is a borough constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.
BoundariesThe constituency covers the north-eastern part of the City of Nottingham. It includes the suburbs of Mapperley and Greenwood, the residential areas of Forest and Radford, and Sherwood prison. Formerly, many constituents commuted to work in the coal pits. The seat was thought to be a safe Labour Party area until Michael Knowles won it for the Conservative Party in their landslide election of 1983. Knowles retained the seat for the Tories with a reduced majority at the 1987 election, but Labour, in the person of John Heppell, gained it in 1992; Heppell has held the seat since.
