Northern Spirit was a train operating company in the United Kingdom in the 1990s, running trains in the north of England. It was formed when the Regional Railways North East shadow franchise was let to MTL. Northern Spirit started its operations in 1997 and continued until 2000. At this point, MTL ran into difficulties and the company was sold to Arriva, who renamed it as Arriva Trains Northern.
Northern Spirit ran a variety of services in the north of England around connecting cities such as Sheffield, Leeds, York and Manchester.
Northern Spirit also ran the Transpenninexpress services which are currently run as a separate train operating company called First TransPennine Express.
