North-Western Rhodesia

North-Western Rhodesia in south central Africa was formed and administered from 1891 under charter by the British South Africa Company which in 1890 had signed a treaty with King Lewanika of the Barotse, the most powerful traditional ruler in the territory. Although having features of a charter colony the treaty and charter gave the territory protectorate status although not as an official protectorate of the United Kingdom government.

In 1911 the British South Africa Company amalgamated North-Western Rhodesia with North-Eastern Rhodesia to form Northern Rhodesia, later Zambia.

The territory consisted of the western half of present-day Zambia up to the Kafue River, its border with North-Eastern Rhodesia. Later the border between the two chartered territories was moved east but the distinction did not have any great implications.

The capital was initially at Kalomo, and moved in 1907 to Livingstone.
