Biography
Michał Korybut Wisniowiecki. Drawing by Jan Matejko
Following the abdication of King Jan II Kazimierz Waza and the end of The Deluge, the Polish nobility elected Michał Wiśniowiecki king. Michał was the son of a successful but controversial military commander, Jeremi Michał Wiśniowiecki, known for his ruthless actions against Bohdan Chmielnicki's Uprising. Michał Wiśniowiecki's reign was less than successful. His father's military fame notwithstanding, Michał lost a war against the Turks, who occupied Podole.[1] He was unable to cope with his responsibilities and with Poland's quarreling factions. On his death, Jan Sobieski was elected King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and crowned as John III. AncestorsGallery
