Mark Coyne is an American musician and one of the original members of the rock band, The Flaming Lips.
He is described as "a man known to drink his own blood and single handedly destroy houses with a sledgehammer."[1] Coyne co-founded the group along with his brother Wayne in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma during the year 1983. According to some reports, the band was enabled by a collection of instruments that Wayne had stolen from a local churchcitation needed. The original lineup of the Flaming Lips was Mark on lead vocals, Wayne on guitar and Michael Ivins on bass. Mark left the band in 1985 (shortly after their self-titled debut EP was released) during the time when the group was recording the demos for their first full length, Hear It Is. His "limited" vocal abilities, then-recent marriage, distaste for the musician lifestyle and supposed "descent in to hard narcotics" are among speculated rumors for his leaving. Upon Mark's departure, Wayne assumed head vocalist and songwriting duties.
Some of the 1985 demos that Mark sang on were released as a part of the Finally the Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid compilation. The tracks are "Trains, Brains and Rain," "One Million Billionth Of A Millisecond On A Sunday Morning" and "Jesus Shootin' Heroin."
