This is a list of islands of the United States , as ordered by area . It includes all islands with an area greater than 20 square miles (approximately 32 km² ), but excludes peninsulas such as Cape Cod , Copper Island , or Delmarva Peninsula that were originally connected to the mainland, but have been effectively transformed into islands by the building of canals .
