Kerry South is a constituency represented by three Teachtaí Dála (TDs) in Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Oireachtas . As of 2005, the constituency has an electorate of 51,761. The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote . The constituency is located in the southern half of County Kerry , Ireland , taking in Killarney , Caherciveen and Kenmare .
It was established by the Electoral (Revision of Constituencies) Act 1935 (No. 5/1935) when the previous Kerry constituency was divided into the two new constituencies of Kerry North and Kerry South. It was first used in the 1937 General election electing Members of the 9th Dáil .
The most high profile TD in the constituency is the current Ceann Comhairle , John O'Donoghue . Another colourful politician from the area is the Independent deputy Jackie Healy-Rae . If John O'Donoghue continues as Ceann Comhairle until the next general election and he seeks election to Dail Eireann then only two seats will be contested in Kerry South as O'Donoghue will be elected automatically.
