Kappa Kappa Psi is a national honorary band fraternity dedicated to serving college and university bands. The fraternity, headquartered at the historic Stillwater Station in Stillwater, Oklahoma, numbers 4,600 active members in over 180 active chapters, and over 45,000 alumni. Since 1947, Kappa Kappa Psi has recognized Tau Beta Sigma as "an equal affiliated organization with a parallel purpose, function and role in the college and university band setting," and the two organizations hold joint conventions.
HistoryKappa Kappa Psi was founded on November 27, 1919 by ten members of the Oklahoma A & M College (later to be known as the Oklahoma State University) Band, led by William Alexander Scroggs and the band director and mentor, Bohumil Makovsky. The other founding members were A. Frank Martin, Raymond D. Shannon, Clyde Haston, Clayton E. Soule, Carl A. Stevens, William H. Coppedge, Dick Hurst, Asher Hendrickson, and Iron Hawthorne Nelson. Kappa Kappa Psi was for many years an exclusively male fraternity, though Title IX led the organization to become co-ed in the late 1970s. Kappa Kappa Psi has grown tremendously in the past ten years, doubling in membership as well as number of chapters. Ties to other organizationsIn addition to the close relationship with Tau Beta Sigma, Kappa Kappa Psi has historical and current relationships with several other organizations.
DistrictsKappa Kappa Psi is divided into seven geographical areas known as districts. These are the Northeast, Southeast, North Central, Midwest, Southwest, Western, and International Districts (a hypothetical district comprising all chapters outside the United States, although there are not and never have been any such). Each district is lead by one or more Governors appointed by the National President, as well as a council elected from and by the members of the Districts. The current District Councils are: Midwest District:

National OfficersAll national officers serve a two year term, from the close of one national convention to the close of the next. The National Vice President for Professional Relations is appointed by the new National President, the National Vice President for Colonization and Membership assumes the presidency upon approval by a simple majority vote, and all other officers are elected at the convention. Generally National Officers do not serve successive terms in the same position, although there is no rule against this. The recent past and current national officers of Kappa Kappa Psi are: [5]
Board of TrusteesMembers of the Board of Trustees are elected at each convention for a four-year term, with three seats coming open at each convention. The Immediate Past National President automatically receives a seat for two-years. [6]
District GovernorsDistrict Governors are appointed by the National President and, like all other national officers, serve a term from one national convention to the next. It is not uncommon for a Governor to be reappointed to multiple successive terms. [7] Northeast District:
