John Dickson (1795-1847) was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He was the brother of Dr. Samuel Henry Dickson and helped the first female doctor Elizabeth Blackwell, to prepare for medical school. He was educated at Yale University and had a medical degree as well as being an ordained presbyterian minister. He had a boarding school in Asheville, North Carolina where Elizabeth Blackwell taught. He died there of tuberculosis.
